Considering that modern Australia was founded as a British colony, why is the capital on the side furthermost from Britain (South-East) and not a northern city like Darwin or an eastern city like Perth?

Looking for books on the Hittites, their origins, the political and military history of their empire, and anything that we know about Hittite economy, religion, society, daily life and culture.
I already have Trevor Bryce's The Kingdom of the Hittites and Life and Society in the Hittite World.

I've been reading a lot about the Byzantine Empire and how Greek was the common language for centuries in huge swathes of the Mediterranean world. Yet today Greek is pretty much only spoken in Greece and Cyprus, and has no major related languages to it in the same way that Latin morphed into the thriving family of Romance languages. Why is that? Did the Ottoman Turks and all the other successor states of the formerly Greek speaking areas specifically stamp out the language?

I’ve been tasked to give a brief lecture on any topic related to my fire department. (Oklahoma City Fire) It’s a task given to some of the rookies. I’ve decided I would like to do a deep dive into where we have had fire stations in the past. I was inspired after my Officer pointed out a building to another firefighter and mentioned how he believed it use to be a fire station. I figured if if the 15+ years officer wasn’t sure where our stations are it would be a fun thing to research.
The problem is I have no idea where to begin looking for this information. The library had nothing. There’s some information from old books in the stations but as far as I can tell I haven’t found a complete record of station locations/changes.
Quick info: The department was formed as voluntary in 1889 and became full time in 1894.

A gripe I've often had with internet historians is the idea that "Everyone always knew xyz, because several Greek scientists were able to deduce it.", while the latter sentiment may be true, this doesn't mean that society as a whole subscribed to this belief, or if they ever heard it. How well did information from books, poems and other philosophical works disseminate?
Did the Greeks all know Herodotus' writings on Egypt? Did the Romans share Ovid's Ars Amoria with each other like it was a Cosmopolitan article? Were Pliny the Elder's facts on nature common knowledge?
What kind of numbers was Ciero getting?

Obviously it had to be done, but I always wondered if there was a sense of sadness about having to fight their fellow countrymen? I wondered if there were any good diaries from soldiers on the topic?

Slaves marrying from other plantations, how did this work?
I'm from Australia, so I have had little education on the slave trade in America and these people's day-to-day lives. So excuse my ignorance on this topic.
But I'm reading 'George Washington - A Life' by Ron Chernow. And he mentions there being no case documented in which Washington denied slaves the right to marry between plantations.
This had me confused as I didn't think they would ever really meet or see eachother between plantations. In saying that as I mentioned I don't know the schedule that slaves adhered to and the opportunity they would have for meeting other people they wished to marry.

This tweet just popped up in my timeline: https://twitter.com/andreloez/status/1554754683721465858
The quote in the title is part of a longer paragraph in Andrew Roberts' "The Storm of War" and he claims that there is no official French history of the 2nd World War because more French fought for the Axis than the Allies. The source seems to be an interview with Max Hastings from 2003.
So do we have some general numbers on this claim or any idea where this could come from?

Alexander has been previously presented to care for omens and taking them seriously. So why is he so disrespectful of the omen in this case?
Context from Peter Greens Alexander of Macedon: Twice they refused to mount the scaling-ladders during a siege, until the king himself led the way, and shamed them into following him. On the second occasion a soothsayer (doubtless sensing the troops' reluctance) warned Alex ander against pressing this attack: the omens indicated danger to his life. Alexander looked at him sharply. 'If anyone interrupted you while you were about your pro fessional business,' he snapped, 'I have no doubt you would find it both tactless and annoying, correct?' The seer agreed. 'Well,' said the king, 'my business - vital business is the capture of this citadel; and I don't intend to let anych superstitious crackpot stand in my way.'

So, how would the average King in the middle ages (we'll say mid-middle ages) in Western Europe have eaten, how much variety of food would they have had? How would the quality of their food compared to something that the average middle class North American have access to nowadays in terms of variety and quality?

What jobs out there, not teaching related, that best apply the analytical and synthesis skills that history majors gather? I’m a teacher, but have been questioning my decision. I have a very strong writing background, and find myself searching for a new career. Please help with some different options!

So I’m 20yrs old and am thinking about going back to school to study history just because I want to write a book for the POC’s of America to unlearn all the bs about their (and my) people. I’ve always had a love for history and an interest in what has happened in the past, bc it’s almost like a preview into what’s next. But my question is what made you want to become a historian? And how did you go about employment after school?

I think that crusades from the Muslim perspective isnt a topic discussed much, and the crusades from a civilian perspective also isn't something Ive heard much info on.
What was like for your average Muslim living under Catholic rule in the Kingdom of Jersualem, the Principality of Antioch and their associated states? What kind of oppression did they face?

As the title says how did this form of singing originate? I've always heard Mongolian throat singing before since my early days in college, yet I always wondered how it originated, and it didn't occur to me to ask on this sub especially since we all know wikipedia can't be fully trusted.
