What happened if corporal punishments accidentally led to death in 17th century England?

I was reading an account of William Prynne, who twice nearly died while suffering judicial punishment for his Puritan activity. His books were burned and he almost suffocated on the smoke, and then his ears, which had already been cropped, were cropped again, leading to severe blood loss. (Both of these are cited in Michael Braddick's God's Fury, England's Fire.)

If he had died in either case, would those carrying out the punishment have been considered liable or punished in any way? More generally, in an age where corporal punishment was frequently used, was inflicting accidental death ever legally punished?

How did the Japanese public react to the calendar switching from the traditional Japanese one to the Gregorian one during the Meiji Restoration?

I would like to know whether a majority of the Japanese people just accepted this drastic change (especially since moving traditional holidays to the Gregorian Calendar has changed the season in which many of them are held) or if there was any significant resistance, and, if so, what kind. Thanks in advance for any answers!

During the Thirty Years’ War, a number of Scots fought under Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, yet there doesn’t appear to have been much of an English commitment. Why?

That is, why did Scotland have such a visible commitment compared with England despite a common monarch (excluding the Civil War years, of course.)

Did the American War of Independence have an impact on any independence movements in Latin America?

I live in Canada and from what I understand the American War of Independence had little impact on any independence movements here. At the time most people still viewed themselves as British subjects and had little reason to revolt. I was wondering if this is the same case for Latin American countries. Did people living in modern day Mexico, Peru, Columbia, Brazil etc. still view themselves as Spanish/Portuguese citizens after the independent American state was formed?

Did pilots during WW2 have any possibility of using toilet facilities while in the air?

I know it's a weird question, and sorry if I am not phrasing it correctly, but I wondered whether the relatively short flight times of fighter pilots and contrarily the relatively long flight times of bomber crews made toilet facilities onboard the planes a necessity/ obsolete?

Thanks for all the great answers in this sub, and apologies if I in some way do not stick to the rules of this sub.

How were Bishops appointed in the Church of England during the 19th Century?

Reading about the tithe system and rectories, vicarage and Curacies of wildly varying financial value, I couldn’t understand how the actual bishops of dioceses were appointed.

Many bishops held rectories and substantial income from lands, in addition to their episcopal duties, clearly a prominent and highly valued position.

At some point I assume we moved to today’s climbing the hierarchy, but was it always so?

Or did a very well connected priest achieve a minimum amount of service, and patronage and allow him to vault immediately into the bishops palace?

How did Buddhist communities in East/SE Asia perceive the decline of Buddhism in India?

Buddhism today is extremely marginal in India, despite having originated there, having lost ground firstly to Hinduism and later to Islam. Were Buddhist communities in East and Southeast Asia conscious of this decline? Was/is it lamented, akin to Christian and Jewish lamenting the loss of their holy land?

"Drain the swamp", so said the Nazis (research question)

Hi all,

I'm currently enrolled in two courses at my university that have overlapped in an unexpected way and have made an absolutely fantastic potential topic for my thesis. With the modern prominence of the phrase "drain the swamp," it was interesting to me when I began finding the usage of nearly the exact same verbiage in Nazi political speeches and propaganda. This is not me saying that these two usages are the same thing and if you use "drain the swamp" you're a Nazi. I am however interested in the implications of its invocation now vs then. The only trouble is, though I have seen and confirmed its usage in some materials I've read for one of my courses, I need to draw from a breadth of materials that are not within the assigned texts from the class.

Has anyone else observed this in texts from the Weimar Republic or the rise of the early NSDAP? I've found many sources explicating Mussolini's usage of this metaphor, but if anyone happens to recognize what I'm speaking of I'd be absolutely delighted if you could pass some resources my way.

Thank you!

How many soldiers were actually on the battlefield at Crecy in 1346?

I've been reading about the Battle of Crecy, but have found vastly different numbers from sources that all seem legitimate, so I'm curious if anyone knows the real estimates?

History.com says the French numbered only 12,000 (8,000 men at arms, 4,000 archers). Brittanica puts the number at 30,000 and other sources say the French outnumbered the English (who everyone seems to agree had about 14,000).

Who's right?

Any historians in here that can answer some questions on Mormonism?

I’m an ex Mormon but am looking for a third party unbiased opinion on history of the Mormon church. My questions are these:

  1. Did Joseph Smith really marry multiple 14 year olds and commit ... physically intimate acts with them while also marrying other men’s wives?

  2. Did Joseph Smith start a militia to over throw local governments and plan to take over the country?

  3. Was Brigham young really a fan of blood atonement, killing people to help them repent of sins i.e. if they leave the church we kill them to help them get to heaven

  4. Were African Americans really denied rights to heaven because of their black skin, and was their black skin taught by Brigham young and other prophets clear into 1970 that they were an evil and lesser race cursed by god?

These questions are painful, but I hope there is someone who can help me here. I need some unbiased opinions.

Was reusing arrows a viable option?

Kind of stemming from a thought from a video game but was reusing already fired arrows an option? Whether imbedded in a surface or enemy flesh, could an archer reuse an arrow or was the tip too blunted from impact to be worth reusing in a future battle vs the cost/time of just using a fresh projectile?

Did people watching operas actually understand them?

I've noticed that in a lot of movies and TV shows set in Victorian England (or the same time period in other countries such as France or America), the operas are being sung in foreign languages such as German. So did the audience actually understand what was being sung?

Source about financial/economical policies

Hi everyone. I have to write a paper about the economy of the Early Roman Empire. More accuratly on monetarisation policies of Augustus. I already have a lot of articles and books for documentation, but I also need sources from the period. It could be an epigraphy, a papyri, anything that gives some informations about some monetary, financial or economical decision during the Empire. I am relatively new into Classical Studies, and would be glad if you can give some suggestions or ideas. Thank you very much!

(I am not anglophone, so sorry for my possible mistakes!)

Books about the unification of Germany@

I lived in West Germany and left right before the wall fell. I have seen much on that time and before. Does anyone have any recommendations for reading that covers the years after the wall came down? It seems I know little about the reunification. And it's seems likely to be a unique and interesting story.

If slaves were treated as expensive property in the South, why weren't they kept in good physical condition?

Hey everyone,

I just started watching the Civil War documentary of Ken Burns and the first episode starts with the description of the horrible conditions slaves lived in.

Here is what I don't understand: why didn't it make economic sense for slave owners to improve the physical condition of the slaves by providing them (at least) better accommodation and some more rest?

Slave owners must have lost thousands of work hours due to the death of slaves at a young age and I assume slaves who suffered from multiple diseases couldn't work as efficiently as the healthy ones.

I hope this wasn't asked here before, I found questions about the treatment of slaves but never from this angle.

In high school, I never really learned about conflicts in the 20th Century other than WWI, WWII, and Vietnam.

What books would you recommend to someone who is interested in the following?

  • The Cold War (including later years with countries in the 80s and 90s fighting for independence)
  • The Russian Revolution
  • The Troubles (Northern Ireland and etc.)

Thanks!
