Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England from 1649 to 1660. The French Revolution of the late 1700's saw the complete abolishment of the French monarchy. England eventually found a system of government where the monarchy could basically co-exist peacefully with the government.
Why didn't France follow a similar pattern? Both countries had periods where the country was simply sick of the monarchy yet France completely abolished theirs while the UK didn't. What were the major differences that saw France permanently abolish the monarchy while England only temporarily did?

I always wondered why the South lost after all the support the US gave to the Sourh. I am curious why the North was almost destined to win. (This is not about why the US left I know that)

I am studying this topic and there's a lot to untangle. It seems to make sense that labour replaced the liberals as the default opposition to the conservatives but to what extent is this backed up by the facts? is there any hard evidence for this?
thanks

Am i justified to compare the suffering and oppression of Africans who were brought to America to the suffering and oppression of the serfs in Europe or is this a false equivocation?

I can't find an exact date for this online. Was the launch promoted by the Soviet Union prior to the event or did they reveal if after the satellite went up?
Thank you!

When 2/3rds of the cast suddenly drop dead, was this a motif people would go into the theatre anticipating or was it designed to catch them off guard?

Would Denver or Boulder have been included in this area? What about areas further west such as Aspen and Vail? Are there any accurate maps that show exactly what areas in Colorado were ceded in this treaty?

My dad believes that fascism is a radical left wing ideology and that fascism and communism are two names for the same thing, and I’m trying to figure out why (or if) that argument is flawed. I’m aware that Stalinism is a very authoritarian interpretation of communist doctrine and that “Nazi” comes from National Socialism, but these aren’t the only two examples of fascism or communism to rise or fall. Would such similarities be shown in Italy and Spain, or China and the rest of the Comintern?

How did people react to these terms? Did the minor gains fuel any future desires for imperialism?

I found Eco’s essay awhile ago and found it very compelling. Given how hard it is to actually define fascism, I feel like this essay really breaks down the ideology into its basic components, and helps anyone understand what the ideology really is. However, I wouldn’t want to accidentally be spreading misinformation. So, can any historian of fascism give their assessment of the essay, and whether or not it works as an description of fascism?

The average Greek sees him as a national hero. I know that he gave 3 pretty great speeches (his response when asked to surrender the city) and his final one on May 28, 1453, all of which tell me he was a serious man with clear goals in mind. We also know he was a good warrior. How was he as an emperor, however?

I doubt they have ever had the means to set themselves out militarily so surely it's some kind of economic quid pro quo with France or something? No idea, please enlighten me.

We have all heard about how many of the soldiers on the Western Front weren't actually French / British but instead came from the colonies. What I am curious about is whether the people back in the colonies were okay with sending a bunch of troops to a conflict that presumably had little bearing on their day to day lives. To me, it seems like the opportune time for a colony to rebel or to declare independence. For example, what if Canada said "Enough is enough, we don't need Canadian troops dying to defend France, we are independent now" in 1916 - it seems to me like Great Britain wouldn't really be able to do anything about it unless they withdrew significant amounts of forces from the Western Front and sent them to Canada. This didn't happen, though. So was it patriotism that kept the colonies in line? Was it the fear of the British Navy? Would a typical New Zealander at home in 1917 approve of the war, or was there any political unrest where the colonies didn't want to send troops and material to Europe?

Watch it here. personally I’m not a fan of the trailer myself and feel it’s just poorly made overall, but I’m curious to see the opinions of actual historians.
How “historically accurate” is it overall?
