What made Nixon's visit to China so ingenius?

People who have studied Richard Nixon often praise his trip to China as one the the most well thought out, effective political maneuvers in American history. Why is this the case? Why hadn't improving relations with the PRC been discussed by previous administrations, and what made China so much more receptive to Nixon than to their fellow communists in Russia? What effects, directly and indirectly, did it have on the Vietnamese War and the Cold War as a whole? How did the other Western powers and the Soviet Union react?

How did men keep their suits from being ruined by everyday activities before the modern acceptance of "casual wear"

Quite often in old photographs, men are pictured wearing suits, or at least men's trousers and shirt sleeves, as I assume was the expectation of them when in public until the 1960s. Men are captured on photograph doing all kinds of activities that we would wear casual clothing for today--changing a tire, sitting on the grass, digging a ditch. Were their pants made of different material than out modern conception of trousers or dress pants? How did they not ruin their suits and shirts while wearing them for everyday activities?

Did eastern and western philosophy independently come up with earth, wind, fire and water as basic elements.

I have learnt they are the fundamental elements of Aristotle's categories and they are represented on south korea's flag. Seems just a little bit coincidental.

Though he is known as the Great Emancipator, Lincoln has been quoted saying "I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races[.]”

What exactly were Lincoln's views on race & slavery, and were statements like these just something he said to gain popularity?

How did ships in the age of sail get into port?

I've recently seen a few old engravings/drawings of ships from Roman to Medieval times in very small ports/harbors. How did these ships, particularly larger merchant ships which had to load/offload cargo, which I thought were only powered by their sails, put into port, particularly complex ones with defensive structures to avoid? Were there tugboats powered by oarsmen, or was it just a slow process of tacking with the wind or something else entirely?

"Feudalism" is a misleading/unhelpful concept for understanding medieval Europe. Does it have any utility for Japan?

People refer to the Shogunate periods of Japan as "feudal," at least colloquially. On the one hand, one would imagine that since the concept was created to describe Europe and applied to Japan by metaphor it would be even more useless there. But on the other hand, it the Japanese context it seems to refer to a more tight period of time and to roughly one polity rather than the millennium of diverse states that we call "medieval Europe," so one could imagine it actually describing one coherent system there.

Do serious historians use the term for Japan? Is there a coherent system for that period of Japan that it could describe? Or are we just falling into using the same imprecise term for an even more different society?

In 1821, Greece attempted to rise as an independent Greek state. Many Greeks still called themselves Romans, so why didn't they rise as a new Roman empire/kingdom/republic?

The only reason I can think of was the fact that Constantinople was not going to fall into Roman/Greek hands anytime soon and the Roman/Byzantine empire was pretty much tied to Constantinople. But still, given how the Greeks yearned a restoration of the empire, surely they would have settled for a small part of Greece for the time being, with the dream of restoration always lurking.

Why are Confederate flags so popular among people with Iroquois heritage?

If you google "Rebel Indian Flag" a bunch of images will pop up with a Native American superimposed on a Confederate flag. I've seen maybe five or six of these flags while driving through the local reservation. The most common variation is with a mounted native. What connection does the Iroquois Confederacy have with the Civil War one? It seems rather strange that people really far from the mason-dixon line would fly the flag.

How likely would it be to find the bomber my great grandfather flew? In other words, how many bombers were photohraphed?

My great grandpa flew either a B24 or a B29 during World War 2 which was named "Hump's Honey" which is a play on our seemingly hard to spell last name, Humphrey. I thought it would be cool to have a picture of this, and I've looked in Google, but the closest thing I've found is "Hump'n Honey," but the pilot isn't my grandpa. So basically, is it even likely that his plane was photographed?

What's the difference between between the United States and the National Socialist Party of Germany ?

I recently watched the story of Little Bighorn and the Wounded Knee massacre and when I considered the policy of ethnic cleansing carried out by the U.S. against the native Americans against the Final Solution employed by the Nazi party, I see a direct parallel in terms of the dehumanization of human beings and the genocide that ensued there by creating a pretext for mass murder. In 1875 Ulysses S. Grant plotted to launch an illegal war against the Cheyenne and Lacota people's to seize the black hills that prompted one of the bloodiest events in history. Does the U.S. falsely hold Grant and his cohorts as heroes when they are actually war criminals ?

America in WW2

Teachings about World War in schools where I live are almost non existent. I was hooked to World War 2 when I started learning about it from Movies & Books. I have watched fair share of World War movies, few books. And learned few things about Holocaust from online courses and YouTube. Generally I perceived The US & allies as 'Good' cause they beat 'Evil' Hitler. But as I learn few more things about war I don't think I can consider America as good. They were pretty horrible too. Few people will say there is no one good or bad in war and stuff but I don't think that's good argument. So my question, generally speaking were Soviets better than other two in moral Department?

I don't have much knowledge about topic. My opinions might be wrong. No offense meant.

How accurate is it that, in the U.S., the Democratic Party of today was more like the Republican Party of 150 years ago, and vice versa?

I have read many times that these two parties essentially "switched places" in our political system. When researching it, information I find is extremely scattered and disjointed, though it does often support this claim.

So I was wondering if anyone could help me out, I am hoping for some sort of clear and concise timeline that could address this question. Thank you.
