The two parties in the 1800 Presidential election were the Federalist party (represented by John Adams), and the Democratic-Republican Party (represented by Thomas Jefferson). Which party is more similar to the Democrats today, and which is more similar to the Republicans?

And how did they evolve, exactly?

What kind of ships were used around 1800-1900 for fishing or whaling?

I don't know if this is the place to ask, but I have been researching ships for a story I am writing. There is a crew of about 10, so that might narrow the size of ship. Would a whaling ship differ from a fishing one?

Another question is, would there be a way for me to find the layout of that ship? I would like to design my own in order to help me envision the characters as I write. Thank you!

What was the point of trench warfare?

I know WHAT trench warfare is. I've read/seen a lot about HOW tench warfare was executed. But I can't find a satisfactory answer for WHY trench warfare was used.

Neither side gains or loses a lot of ground using this technique. So what is the point?

It ends up creating a no-man's-land. But why is this no-man's-land different from other contentious borders, for example, the DMZ between the Koreas? Why in WWI did trench fighters see actual fighting instead of just creating a stand-off between sides?

I'm assuming it has something to do with the invention of tanks and larger explosives. ¯\(ツ)

What were the Eastern Wu's claims of legitimacy during the Three Kingdoms period in China?

During the fall of the Han and the rise of the Three Kingdoms what were the claims of legitimacy by each of the main kingdoms? I understand that the "legitimate continuation of the Han empire" was a big talking point when it comes to legitimating their own rule. So I understand that Cao Wei tried to legitimate himself through control of the Han emperor, and Shu Han's used Liu Bei's lineage to the Liu family as a way to legitimate their battle against Cao Wei.
So what was Sun Wu's claim? I mean the Sun Clan didn't really have ties to the Liu family. I understand that there was a lot of "southern pride" involved when it comes to the identity of that kingdom, but did they flaunt that willingly?

What is a good choice for an internship as a history student?

Hello historians of Reddit, I don't really know if this is the right place to ask this, but I will try.

I am a history student at a university in Germany looking forward to my job-focused internship. But I am uncertain about where to do that internship, I can only think about a museum, but that can't be all there is. I am especially interested in german and european history, but I would also say that i am very interested in history as a subject in general. I am still not sure what I want to do in the future, but I thought of historian or a profession that is in some kind history-related. Can you guys maybe give me an idea, telling me about how you got into your profession? And do you have a proposal on what place a good internship place for a history student could be? Thanks, and sorry for bothering you guys! :)

In the HBO miniseries "John Adams", there is a scene in which Alexander Hamilton suggests that then President Adams should invade Spain's territory in the Americas. Did Hamilton actually suggest this or have expansionist desires?

In the miniseries, the sixth episode is about John Adams's presidency. Hamilton is often portrayed as inflammatory and one of the obstacles that Adams has to work around. This characterization may or may not be historically accurate, but I'm mostly interested in one scene from the episode.

Here is the scene on YouTube: https://youtu.be/KaWBs46USqE

Hamilton suggests occupying Spanish Florida and Louisiana and detaching South America from Spain which leads to Adams berating him and questioning his sanity.

My questions are did Hamilton actually have these dreams of an empire and territorial expansion like the show makes it seem, and was there an actual confrontation between him and the president like in the show?

To what extent, if any, did Abraham Lincoln know Karl Marx?

Apologies if this is a rather strange question but it's been on my mind lately. Living in the South, I've met a wide variety of people but I recently met some "Lost Cause" neo-Confederate sympathizers and what they had to say about President Lincoln was very strange. Aside from their obvious hatred of Lincoln for his domestic policies, they claimed that he was a friend of Karl Marx and that they wrote letters to each other.

I never really thought about it but Marx would've been around the height of his career around the time of the civil war. Is there any truth to Marx and Lincoln writing to each other? If so, or even if not, is there any evidence that Lincoln knew of Karl Marx and had an opinion of him?

What made Ancient Greek society so prosperous?

I've heard that the reason the Ancient Greeks were so influential in the areas of maths, science, philosophy etc. was that they were among the first (at least Western / European) societies to be wealthy enough that some people could be professional thinkers.

Assuming this is true, what was it about that society that made it so successful, as opposed to other early European societies?

Were some ethnic Japanese women comfort women themselves in WW2?

I'm reading about the demographics of comfort women in wikipedia and I realised these curious findings:

Chuo University professor Yoshiaki Yoshimi states there were about 2,000 centers where as many as 200,000 Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Taiwanese, Burmese, Indonesian, Dutch and Australian women were interned.[59]

In further analysis of the Imperial Army medical records for venereal disease treatment from 1940, Yoshimi concluded that if the percentages of women treated reflected the general makeup of the total comfort women population, Korean women made up 51.8 percent, Chinese 36 percent and Japanese 12.2 percent.[30]

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comfort_women#Countries_of_origin

Did the Imperial Japanese really force one of their own women to become comfort women? I'm aware that they're brutal but not this wantonly brutal since, like any other fascist group, they tended to give more privilege to members of the "superior race", who in this case were the Yamato Japanese.

Thanks for reading.

I’ve heard some say that because we now know Troy was real and that there could have been a war described in the Iliad, that that could have been the trigger for the collapse.

Is there any credence to this? From what I understand Troy was a coveted city by the Mycenaeans and the Hittite’s right?

What Civil Wars are Being Referred when Talking about Why a Woman Cannot Rule (England) as Queen?

I've always found it interesting that so many were afraid to have a female ruler in England that the whole deal with Henry 8th occurred. One documentary said it was because civil wars broke out due, but didn't give any information beyond that. What civil wars were they talking about?

I'm sorry if this question is stated wrongly for this sub. I've tried researching this on my own, but couldn't find much. Thus why I'm asking.
