How did Shia Islam move from Egypt to Iran?

During the high middle ages the Shia Caliphate/Fatimid Caliphate was located in Egypt and with it the majority of Shia Islam & its powerbase. At the same time the Sunni Caliphate/Seljuk Sultanate was located in Persia/Iran and with it alot of the Sunni powerbase.

In modern times we see the situation is reversed with Iran being the centre of Shia islam while Egypt is sunni with shiites being less fortunate in the region.

How did this transition happen? How did Shia islam move to the location of the Sunni centre and vice versa? How did they completely swap locations like this and how long did it take?

Is the claim that muslim pirates dramatically increased slave kidnappings and made the mediterranean much less safe than before and thus significantly decreased trade, true?

So I was watching a video from the youtube channel "Real Crusades History" (a channel previously described on this subreddit as "having an ideological axe to grind"). In the video, where they debunk another video about the First Crusade, they claimed that after the islamic conquests in the 7th century, the mediterranean which had previously been flourishing with trade, now was infested with muslim pirates who raped and pillaged and kidnapped people to slavery, thus largely decreasing trade and making it dangerous for Christian pilgrims. As the book I'm reading (A History of the Arab Peoples by Albert Hourani) often presses the importance of the mediterranean- Indian ocean trade link to the caliphates, I can't help but doubt this statement. But I'm not the historian so that's why I'm asking you! In case you think I'm misrepresenting, here's the video: https://youtu.be/44N0rs9YPmA Also, feel free to bring up any other possible wrong things with the video!

Why did Churchill lose to Attlee in 1945?

It seems counter-intuitive to me that Winston Churchill would have been voted out of office at the end of WWII. He had just shepherded Great Britain through an incredibly difficult period and emerged victorious. Why then was Clement Attlee elected to Prime Minister at the end of the war?

How were Asian-American students dealt with in the US during the time of segregated schools?

Did they go to white schools, black schools, or neither? Or was it dealt with on a case-by-case basis?

I'd also be interested in hearing answers about Latin Americans, but particularly interested in Asian Americans. Also, was treatment different based on where in Asia they were from (Indians vs. East Asians, for example)?

What is known about horse transport in ancient times?

Apparently, the great heathen army transported horses 60 nautical miles from east anglia to the northern part of anglo saxon britain.

William the conqueror also springs to mind. Transporting horses across the english channel.

Then there were the conquistadores, who brought horses all the way to the americas.

So what evidence is there for how this was done? In absense of it, is there conjecture from those that have read into the subject?

Could someone help me translate the engravings on this late 1800s Chinese lead container inherited from my great great grandmother?

Images of the container posted here: https://imgur.com/gallery/HYED8

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit to post this, if it's not please direct me to an appropriate one!

We think this is a lead container from the late 1800s. Inherited from my grandpa whom inherited it from his grandma (my great great grandma).

According to my dad (whom heard the story from his grandpa), my grandpa's family was quite wealthy in the Swatow region of China. Great great grandma's father was supposedly a magistrate. During the communist movement, my family fled China to Singapore and they took this container with them. We're not sure why, but we think that they used the container to store medicine as it has an airtight seal.

We've always wondered what was engraved on the container, especially after my grandparents passed away. We also wanted to verify the history of the container, since everything we've heard up to now are stories passed on within the family. Thanks in advance for your help!

Let's say I'm a pirate in 67BC. Where would I go to turn myself in?

Let's assume I'm a Mediterranean pirate in 67BC.

From what I've read, Pompey instituted a program when he was trying to wipe out piracy after the sacking of Ostia earlier in the year; this program allowed pirates to turn themselves in and become land holders in Rome. What benefits did this confer? Were they offered citizenship in addition to a pardon? If I were a pirate, where would I go to take advantage of the offer? How could I be sure I wouldn't just be crucified after I turned myself in?

As a follow up, what were the job prospects for a retired pirate? Pirate hunter?

Today:

Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.

So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

Did FDR know that an Allied victory was guarenteed before his death on April 12, 1945?

At the time of his death Germany was less than a month away from capitulating, US forces had taken Iwo Jima and most of Okinawa. He knew about the completion (or near-completion) of the Manhattan project. Did FDR know before he died that the Allies would be victorious in their unconditional surrender of all Axis powers? Surely the writing must have been on the wall by then, and post-war plans must have been ironed out for the most part at Yalta.
