When did Americans, and the rest of the world, discover the atrocities towards Jewish folk during World War 2? Was it known about prior to our entry to the war, or only discovered after reaching Germany and happening upon it during the campaign?

Why is Belarus?

So far as I can discover, the territories that now form Belarus have relatively little history as an independent nation, having passed from Russian principalities, to Polish-Lithuanian dominance, to absorption into the Russian Empire and then the USSR.

How did a Belorussian national conscience develop, and why did it emerge as an independent state after the fall of the USSR?

When and why did Christian Europe abandon its ambition to control the Holy Lands?

From the middle ages to the modern period, European Christians moved from being prepared to fight and die to recover Jerusalem to seemingly accepting that it would be controlled by Muslims. What precipitated this change, when did it occur and how did Western support for Zionism play into this?

EDIT: Perhaps this question is slightly unclear - what I'm asking about is how and why European Christian countries went from being in the position of wanting the Holy Lands but being unable to take them at the end of the Crusades, to being able to take them but unwilling to do so during the late modern period, and what role, if any, political Zionism played in the late 19th/early 20th centuries.

Did Greeks and Romans really believe in their mythology?

Greek mythology is great to read about, but is often times also really stupid and random. Did the general population of Greece truly believe that Uranus was a primordial being that got his dick cut off? Did they read it like stories with moral messages, like we read the lord of the rings?

Did the dating of the Ramadan ever cause a controversy like the early medieval Easter dating controversy?

In early medieval Ireland, the correct dating of Easter was something that put the local church at odds with the rest of the western European Christian church. Other religions did and do have celebrations that fall on different days every year, like the Ramadan for the Muslims. Are there examples in history of religious controversies caused by different interpretations of the calendar?

Was there any part of the Southern Irish population that wanted to remain in the Union? Was Independence Inevitable?

I know that the Protestants in the North were Unionists, but in the South was there any part of the population that wanted to stay in the British Union?

Could the British government have satisfied Legitamte Irish Complaints without having to go for Home Rule or Republicanism?

In hindsight, was Independence inevitable, or if the House of Lords had lost influence and the Welfare state had been founded before Irish Independence, could that have scuppered republicanism?

Mny thks for any info

Were there Renaissance English writers able to read works written in Old English?

I am thinking of famous ones like Shakespeare, Marlowe, etc. And if the answer is 'No', do we have evidences that at least some of them were aware of the existence of Old English literatures? Thanks.

I know it started with an assassination, but I know there are events leading up to that moment that really made the region unstable. Could anyone shed some light on what was happening in Europe at that time?

Looking for knowledge of the Roman empire

Ive recently become entralled with the history of Rome, beginning with a youtube channel called Historia Civilis. Great videos describing Roman war tactics, but now im interested in pretty much all of Roman history. The biggest challenge ive faced is finding any credible sources regarding Rome. For example; many websites ive been to dont even reference Romulus as the founder, yet i know he existed to some extent. Maybe im mistaken in thinking him and his twin brother started the wheels of Rome, but so far any sources i find that dont even mention Romulus ive learned to distrust. Obviously it would be far too much to type in a reddit comment, does anyone know of a great source for Roman history? Idealy I would love to see a robust timeline with emperors, there actions and events within Rome, there campaigns and relations with other countries, and so on. Thank you for your time!

One Ottoman writer in the 1600s has his fictional Native American characters say, "Our world used to be peaceful, but it has been filled with a greedy people, who make war every year and shorten our lives." Was sympathy for non-Muslim victims of European imperialism common among the Ottomans?

The writer is Evliya Celebi, who claims that he did encounter these Native Americans in the Netherlands. But this can't be true because Celebi claims that he arrived in the Netherlands by riding across Germany with an army of 40,000 Tatar horsemen, which is obviously impossible.

Appalachian historians, what we're cabins like in early 20th century (especially 1900-1905)?

I'm in the research stage of novel writing. It's set in Kentucky in the Appalachia mountain region, 1904. I want to be as historically correct as possible. Looking for insight into what the rooms were like (kitchens, bedrooms, etc.), furniture, etc. Open to as many details as possible.

How did the kings/Queens of England 'lose' their powers?

My assumption is that a couple of hundred years ago the monarch was all powerful, but now they have exactly zero real power.

How did that change happen?
Was it a set of small changes of certain privileges/laws that eventually allowed for the removal of all the powers?
Or was it a deliberate change, (maybe instigated by the monarchs themselves).

So, I'm a big fan of rum, mostly nicer sipping rums, and I'm curious if anyone knows what rum that sailors were drinking in the 1700's was like compared to rum now?

Why was West Virginia allowed to become a state?

As I understand it, during the American Civil War several counties of Virginia agreed to break away in order to side with the Union instead. However Article 4 Section 3 of the United States Constitution says

"New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State... without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.""

I Highly doubt Confederate Virginia consented in the United States congress to a large chunk of their land be seceded to form West Virginia, so I'm wondering; why was West Virginia allowed to become and stay its own state despite the Constitution seemingly specifically forbidding it?

If, 5000 years from now, historians uncovered Inglourious Basterds, would they conclude that Lieutenant Aldo Raine was real? Or, how do historians deal with historical fiction?

On the Wikipedia article on Gilgamesh, it's stated that Gilgamesh is believed to have existed because other characters from the Epic were attested in written sources predating the Epic. However, Hitler, Goebbels (IIRC) and Churchill are very real figures from history, predating Basterds, that also showed up in the film.

How do historians deal with historical fiction?

There were pilots who flew in both WW1 and WW2. Do we have any accounts of their personal insight/thoughts on the massive advances in aeronautics between the two wars?

It strikes me that in about 20 years air battles went from something like this with a top speed of 150km/h to aircraft like this doing more than three times the speed.
