Many pacific island countries on now socially quite conservative (for example, they would think a woman running in running shorts to be inaproriately dressed). Was this the case before Christian (and Morman) missionaries arrived?

It would seem that widespread telephones would be necessary since you need a way to call ahead and if you went out to tell the restaurant what you wanted in person you might as well eat it there. But then again, there were other messaging systems and advanced postal systems that predated the widespread adoption of the telephone.

My grandfather was an artist and designer living in Michigan in the mid-20th century and I have a series of his preliminary sketches for window and merchandise displays that I am trying to research. Based on family histories, I believe they were made for department stores in Lansing (Knapp’s) and Detroit (Hudson’s), neither of which are still in business. What are the best resources to help me find records of his work?
Hoping someone can help point me in the right direction(s) or offer suggestions.

If the paper plane came first, what were they called before planes were invented?
If the plane came first, how on earth did we manage to build flying machines before we could simply fold paper in a certain way?

I am interested in learning about men who practiced feminism in their own lives, perhaps through their parenting or their political or religious activities. If there are such men, and I assume there must be throughout all of history, I would be very interested to know what they thought, how radical they were interpreted as being, and how strongly they held their beliefs.
Also, can you think of any men pre-18th century who thought women were intellectually equal to men?
*I don't mean male authors/artists/musicians/playwrights who created three-dimensional female characters, though I can see how that could be interpreted as feminist. I am looking for something a little bit less abstract.*
I know this is a little vague, but it is so because I think any answer (any man, any pre-18thc time period, any location!) will be equally fascinating.

Are there any civilizations that existed before Mussolini's Italy that could retroactively be labeled "fascist"? For example, pre-agricultural societies are similar to what Marx might call a "communist" society. Are there any examples like that for fascism?
I know that the intellectual roots of fascism predate Mussolini, but I'm talking more about civilizations that actually put fascist ideas into action, even if they hadn't invented fascism yet.

So I understand that ethnicity comes from a group of people that share a similar genetic makeup and such. So Italians have similar genetic features to other italians etc. But how do we determine what can be considered an ethnicity. Is it just a group of people that occupied a specific region for a long period of time that created a unique genetic combination?
By that logic, could there theoretically be a homogenized ethnicity in the US one day? Or is ethnicity going to eventually become a hostorical phenomenon?

I talked to people organizing a medieval LARP set in besieged Acre. They're trying to serve authentic food there but told me that they could find very few sources describing recipes from the Holy Land in the late 13th century. Do we have any sources or anything that could be used as a basis for the cooks?

At long last I’m replaying Kingdom Come Deliverance, and I’m having a blast. When you play as the miller’s daughter Teresa in the DLC A Woman’s Lot, many of the people you interact with trust you with less than legal activities and information on the basis of “you’re the Miller’s daughter”. When silver goes missing from the mine your family is the first to be questioned, on the basis of “well, you’re millers.”
Is there any historical basis for this? Were millers generally considered less trustworthy or more prone to criminal activity than other parts of Medieval European society? Why?

cancan is a dance that needs a very flexible body, with current dancers needing to cultivate their bodies since they were children to achieve this.I can't imagine many parents supporting their daughters to pursue a career as a cancan dancer in cabaret at that time.

I’m trying to write some fiction from the perspective of a character in the 1390s, and I want to read some materials from this time period to get accustomed to the language and attitudes. He’s a world traveler, so writings from any region would work, but I only speak English fluently so other languages won’t be as useful. I don’t need any specific topics either — I have a fairly good understanding of the general historical context of the period. I really just want to get used to how people would write back then to make my work more accurate. TIA!

When you look at medieval paintings, there’s a particular style that isn’t very lifelike but the later you get, the more realistic paintings become. Is this due to better quality tools or a deliberate stylistic choice or a combination of factors?

Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

Is it worth reading Robert Service's biographies of Trotsky and Lenin, and what about Antony Beevor's "Russia: Revolution and Civil War"?
Secondly, any specific flaws that are present in these works and what sort of biases of the authors should I take into account before reading?
Thirdly, what books are the best and of superior quality to these books in their topics? (Russian Revolution and Civil War, biographies of Soviet Leaders etc)
