Why did Charlemagne divorce the Lombard Princess Desiderata?

I've been doing some light survey-reading on Charlemagne and the Franks in order to get an understanding of the basics before I delve into more detail. I'm finding it really interesting, but there's one thing so far that I don't really "get".

As we know, Charlemagne was at one point married to Desiderata, a Lombard princess. Because the Lombards and the Franks were enemy states, it seemed like an intelligent choice. Why, then, did Charlemagne choose to divorce her? Do we know any of the rationale behind that decision?

What did Oda Nobunaga think of the Bushido Code?

In popular Japanese media, the conquering leader of the Oda clan is depicted as a pragmatist, with very modern views on war strategy and tactics. This is often backed up by his known love for gunpowder and firearms, and how he viewed them as the future.

Is this common depiction actually true? And if so, what did Nobunaga think of the Bushido code? The idea of "samurai honour"? Did it ever clash with this ruthless pragmatism he is often shown to have?

Saturday Reading and Research | December 03, 2016

Previous

Today:

Saturday Reading and Research will focus on exactly that: the history you have been reading this week and the research you've been working on. It's also the prime thread for requesting books on a particular subject. As with all our weekly features, this thread will be lightly moderated.

So, encountered a recent biography of Stalin that revealed all about his addiction to ragtime piano? Delved into a horrendous piece of presentist and sexist psycho-evolutionary mumbo-jumbo and want to tell us about how bad it was? Need help finding the right book to give the historian in your family? Then this is the thread for you!

What were the exact terms on the division of post WW2 Berlin and did the Allied forces break these terms?

After a short visit to Berlin I was very interested in its history. So I knew about West and East Berlin, but I couldnt really figure out why the Allied had control of West Berlin. I read that at the Yalta Conference, it was decided that the Sovjet forces were allowed to capture Berlin. The Sovjet forces seized control in May 1945, but on July 11th they handed over control on the West, supposedly on "temprorary terms" (history.com"

Quote from history.com:

When the war in Europe ended in May 1945, however, Soviet troops were in complete control of eastern Germany and all of Berlin. Some U.S. officials, who had come to see the Soviet Union as an emerging threat to the postwar peace in Europe, believed that the Soviets would never relinquish control over any part of Berlin. However, on July 11, 1945, the Russian government announced that it would hand over all civilian and military control of West Berlin to British and American forces. This was accomplished, without incident, the following day.

So, why did the Soviets give away Western Berlin, did they think it was temporary, if so, on what terms, and consequently, did the Allies break these terms in keeping control of West Berlin?

Thanks!

Where is Marie Antoinette's necklace now?

We all know the story and the subsequent scandal, but I couldn't find any information about its current whereabouts.

Was it melted and the stones reused? Was it lost during the revolution? Stolen?

Did working-class Londoners care about John Wycliff's preaching?

Full disclosure: I'm looking for sources I might've missed that might affect a paper-in-progress. Do we have any evidence to prove that the Average Joe (Commune Iosef?) in late 14th century London bought into Wycliff's ideas about transubstantiation and seizing clerical wealth? He obviously attracted a lot of attention from the top, but what about the bottom? It's easy to think it might have resonated with them, but do we have proof that it did, outside the sketchy chronicle accounts?

How long have Londoners been complaining about house prices?

In the news today, London house prices are very high and there is often talk of a housing crisis. Halifax began tracking UK house prices in 1980. When they started tracking, the average London house price was around £50,000, and the average salary was around £6,000 per year (for the UK, not London-specific). That means the average house price was still 8x the average salary using those rough numbers I googled.

That had me thinking - London has been a big city for a long time and has probably been unaffordable for a long time. Are there historical records of Londoners complaining about house prices?

From what I have been reading, in Victorian London, home ownership wasn't particularly common. But someone would be buying and building and owning them. Was it not common because it was so expensive?

There were also a lot of events in London which may have affected house prices - the Great Fire, the plague, wars, etc.

So I guess my questions are:

What are some early complaints about London house prices? What is the earliest complaint about London house prices? Has London ever been actually affordable?

Yo, what made spears more effective than halberds?

Okay I've done (a very small amount of) some research and everyone, for the most part seems to agree that the spear is historically the most effective melee combat weapon. But like, what about halberds? they had the same pokey abilities but with the added options to chop people or do a swipey pokey with this part of the weapon.

Was West Virginia's secession from Virginia a clean break?

West Virginia seceded from the state of Virginia in 1861 over concerns about the former's secession from the Union, and was admitted to the Union itself in 1863 at the height of the American Civil War. Was the entire state broadly Unionist or were there pockets of Confederate support? How did the state of Virginia, and the Confederacy as a whole, react? What were the thoughts of the Union and the courts on the legality of this move, given that a portion of a state had never attempted to become its own state previously?

Why are our numbers for the Bangladesh Genocide of 1971 all over the charts?

Wikipedia gives 12 estimates for the death toll, ranging from 26,000 to 3 million. Why are these numbers so drastically different? Why are we so unsure about the exact number of people killed?

As a follow up: It seems like the Bangladesh genocide gets very little attention or recognition today, even though it is historically important because of its context in post-colonialism. I come from a Bengali family and some of my relatives have not even heard of it. Could these shoddy numbers be part of the reason why?

Near the beginning of episode 2 of Band of Brothers one of the captured Germans is an American who "answered the call of the motherland" before the US joined WW2

Did a considerable amount of German-Americans actually join Germany before 1941, or was this just for the plot to make it more interesting?
