Of the sources I found they usually just say that these "pupniks" were given away to other dignitaries, is there any information from what happened past that?

This question came to me while thinking about a few different historical things.
Like, when Germany reunified, much of the East German Military personnel and equipment was let go.
After South Africa ended minority rule, there was big questions on how to integrate different rebel groups with the former South African army.
And, A few military bases are named after Confederate officers, and a unified federal army was to fight in future wars like Spanish American, Banana wars, ww1 etc.
So how did the union go about trying to create a true US military?

It seems surprising that something so fundamental as currency and coinage should emerge so late in history. Are we perhaps biased by the lack of evidence in terms of coins discovered in claiming that the Lydians invented metal coinage? What did the Egyptians or the Assyrians use for trade before this period?

How long did it take for all of Russia to be encompassed by Bolshevism ? Like were there any churches or religious communities in the Far East that lasted any amount of time afterwards?

Poor and middle-class women probably ended up in the streets, or in workhouses (or any other refuge, hospice or institution their country had, I guess?), but could upper-class women, with enough assets to live the rest of their lives comfortably without a man in their house, simply stay without any male custodian?
Were there things that their status of minors didn't allow them to do (other than voting), and was the lack of a custodian a disadvantage in their daily life?

In the mid-19th century America newspapers fell along party lines. The same speech by Lincoln might be reported differently in a Republican newspaper than in a Democratic newspaper. But by the 1970s people across the political spectrum watched, listened to and read much the same sources. This implies that the 19th century newspapers at some point became or were replaced by more neutral news sources. So what exactly happened, and at what point?

Was there some sort of program in place for the Allied countries to take in freed prisoners and set them up in their countries? Somebody in the camp must have had no personal possessions to set themselves up somewhere?

The account from the Old Book of Tang listed on the Wikipedia page for this lists 20-30,000 people being eaten due to the defenders of Suiyang starving, which seems difficult to believe or fathom. I know starvation is a common factor in sieges, and sometimes cannibalism can occur in desperate circumstances but is cannibalism on such a scale accepted by historians studying this rebellion?

13 year old, just getting interested in history, studying WW2 at school in the UK asked for a book about WW2.
He’s not the most studious of lads but, obviously, anything I can do to foster interest is A Good Thing.
Does anyone have any recommendations for books for Young adults, academically respectable but not too heavy reading and with plentiful illustrations, maps etc. Unusually, perhaps, he‘s not very interested in hardware or in the military side.
All I can seem to find is Horrible History stuff (which has it’s place but he’s outgrown them) and stuff for primary school children, or stuff he’s just not ready for. There’s no way he’s ploughing though Richard Evans for instance.
TIA

Inspired by the recent META threads and seeing the mods out in force, it got me thinking about what the early days of moderation on the internet was like. Have there always been moderators? Did the early forums and chat rooms have any kind of moderation or was it more of an anarchic free for all?

Not to be confused with William and Mary. I'm not looking for answered about those two.

Today:
You know the drill: this is the thread for all your history-related outpourings that are not necessarily questions. Minor questions that you feel don't need or merit their own threads are welcome too. Discovered a great new book, documentary, article or blog? Has your Ph.D. application been successful? Have you made an archaeological discovery in your back yard? Did you find an anecdote about the Doge of Venice telling a joke to Michel Foucault? Tell us all about it.
As usual, moderation in this thread will be relatively non-existent -- jokes, anecdotes and light-hearted banter are welcome.

I know that Thailands monarchy uses them since the current Monarch is Rama X (the 10th), so I’m guessing regnal numbers are not strictly European.

The only thing I really found was the fact that Aden was useful for the British because of its location, but not much else. Could anyone provide more information on this topic?
Thanks a lot :)

what are some of the best example of accademic content on youtube? I'm already familiar with most of the big historical channel on youtube such as armchair historian and the WW2 channel, but I'm looking for something more in dept, ideally full college courses. In contrast to STEM subjects, where full courses on particular subjects are available with ease with history I'm unable to find more than a single lecture on a specific subject , do you have any suggestion? Ideally I'm looking for content on the history of the 20th century but I would gladly watch a full course on european medival history if it's available .

I have often seen mention of lynch mobs, insurgents like the KKK, and awful attacks and raids on black communities and abolitionists perpetrated by white supremacists, but very little to suggest that anti-slavery activists, ex-slaves or slaves themselves engaged in the same sort of tactics.
Was there ever an organised faction that sought to strike back at groups like the KKK? I can't imagine that there wasn't some sort of reprisal for the vile acts white supremacists committed during this era, was it just that such reprisals weren't undertaken by a specific group and were more sporadic?
Also please remember Rule #1 in your responses, I'm asking this out of pure academic curiosity.

To be specific, I’m talking about lance-using, fully or 3/4 armored, european heavy cavalry publicly conceived as “knights”.
When reading about the 16th century, I’ve often found an utter dismissal of heavy cavalry effectiveness. Examples are cited such as Pavia 1525 or Enghien’s charges at Cerseole 1544.
This is odd to me, because “knights” were in use until at least the end of the century. If they were so ineffective, why were they used for this long? Wouldn’t any prospective noble see the duty of a gendarme as a death sentence by the 1550’s?
Are there any notable 16th century heavy cavalry victories?

Hello! I'm researching for a novel, and I'm having trouble finding any information about what kind of personal identification may have been required/accepted during the process of admission to the Marine Corps. I am from Canada, but I understand that there is no "universal" national ID card in the States. Would the ID requirements have been made on a state-by-state basis? What kind of papers might have been accepted? Specifically I am interested in what kind of "official" racial signifiers may have been present or required on paperwork, if any. In a segregated force, how was someone determined definitively by the recruiters to be either black or white, particularly if they were of mixed race? Any info would be helpful! Thanks! (I first posted this question in r/ww2 but haven't received any responses.)

royalty seemed to have much tighter sewn clothing but the peasantry have very loose clothing that has more fabric (which is very expensive), my boyfriend says it was due to lack of having a tailor or any kind of tools of measurements. and even though im sure thats a part of it i remember watching a video that said it was because peasants didnt want to waste any fabric and royalty could throw scraps away to get a tighter fit. would love to know the reasons behind very loose baggy peasantry garments, thank you !!!
