I know Anne Frank's family lived in an attic, but how did people hide their Jewish friends from the Nazi authorities? Did people build secret bunkers or tunnels? Are there any particularly clever ways?

Basically, I'm looking at grad schools, but I'm not anywhere near fluent in another language, so I have to learn fast. But I want to know others experiences.

While during most of the late Republic and early Empire, a veteran legion seems to have been practically invincible in battle. However, there are a few very prominent defeats that occurred during this period, such as Gergovia, Suthul, Carrhae, Halys, or Mount Garganus. While in the narrative histories this was blamed on the generals, what credit was due to the enemies of the Romans in these defeats? What military advances did they implement to overcome Rome's superior military?

I just read Charles Boxer's book "The Christian Century in Japan" and I wanted to write a paper about how the jesuits' power in japan was heavily tied with its control of the Macao-Nagasaki trade. I just wanted to know if there are additional information that could help my paper which are not found in the book or if there could have been inconsistencies.

After printing is introduced, we know that a lot of what was printed was sermon collections, short pamphlets, and tracts, rather than full-fledged books. Was there a similar method for disseminating shorter reading material before printing was introduced?

For example, is anything happening in the world today a direct and continued response of, say, World War I or II? The American Revolutionary War was over 200 years ago... at what point did the historical context become "solidified", such that when discussing politics or current events, one is only discussing America as it exists now, and not also addressing Revolutionary- or pre-Revolutionary-era battles and treaties and such?

Obviously Islam is quite old, but how much Islamic history should I look into to get an understanding of today's Islam?

It seems like we are entering a new cold war with Russia; how much does the history of the first cold war play into my understanding of current US-Russia relations (whether or not we really are going into a new cold war is up for debate, I suppose)?

Those are all just examples, I don't necessarily need answers to those specific questions. I am not really sure how to phrase the question I am asking. Perhaps: at what point in time does the current "story arc" of our world begin?

When compared to the rest of Europe, Russia (and its satellite nations) has a lot of problems. High poverty rate, extreme levels of corruption, crime levels etc. Clearly these things don't just appear out of nowhere, supposedly they're the effects of many years of bad decision making. What is/was the actual cause of all this? It seems as if Russia shares many of the problems that the Soviet Union was facing for most of the 20th century, leading me to believe the Russian Federation mostly inherent them which makes this a historical question, rather than a modern politcal one.

It seems like this is the end game of the current gun debate. Is there any historical precedent?

Who could Russians put the blame on for the failure to defend Sevastopol during the Crimean war? One could say the British, but were there any other forces that made the Russian defense weaker?
