I'm doing some research and have reached an impasse. I need to know the origin of the words "Caroline" or "Carolina", as in, the US' two states. The only reference I found is that when there was a Carolina territory, before the US had formed colonies, it was named in honor of King Charles I. But, doing some research, King Charles I did not have any relatives, that I can find, that had the name "Caroline" or "Carolina". So, where does this word and name come from?

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm an ardent Allende supporter. But a Chilean friend of mine for some freaking reason believes that while Pinochet is hated by most of the population of Chile, Allende is hated even more because 'he fucked up the country'. I've had a lot of arguments with her. But she can't simply wrap her head around the fact that waiting in line for food and other crap was not worse than the fucking torture and murder of thousands of leftists in Chile. I really need to make a push to show her the atrocities that Pinochet did on her country. So, who was worse in the end, just how fucked up was Pinochet?

I am curious about my ancestry, and would like to learn more about the spread of Islam to the region, particularly the method of conversion (by force, or a more gradual acceptance?). One side of my family has roots in East Punjab, and the other comes from Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh. I also want to know how the Islam at the time of its spread to India had changed, or evolved, since the time of the prophet, and how that influenced the various schools that exist today. I am looking for a historic rather than theological perspective, and I know very little about the topics, so references would be great.

I've been wondering if fame & being famous worked in the same way today. Did historical figures like William Shakespeare, Beethoven, etc become be recognized on the streets? Did they expect fame or understand their historical presence at the time?

And how did people aspire for fame? Or was it merely a luxury of Pharaohs, Kings, and the nobles?

The Watts riots were a huge event, and they didn't happen that long ago. There are still a lot of people alive that were preset for the actual riots. So if the above quote from Wikipedia is true, why did we so quickly lose track of role that police racism played in sparking the riots?

In particular I'm rather interested in cases of pushback against AA musicians - retaliation spurred by the idea that they were "forgetting their place" as the rhetoric goes - though I'm interested in resistance to CRM-advocating musicians and performances in general, there having been a multitude across the racial and ethnic spectrum. Did record labels and radio stations ever blacklist them or otherwise try to cut them off, for example? Or did particular groups (think the "family whatever" types colloquially associated with opposing rock music) denounce and condemn them for one trumped-up charge or another?
