In this purely hypothetical scenario, let's say that an American C-47 loaded with troops is forced to crash land in the USSR in 1943 during the height of the war. How would these soldiers be treated by Soviet forces and Soviet officials? Would they arrange to send them back to the Western Front, would they be stuck in the USSR until the US Army can pick them up, or would they be taken into custody by the NKVD?

I am absolutely fascinated with the english Tudor era. I am wondering specifically why four women around the same time were considered candidates.(Jane Grey, Mary Queen of Scots, Mary I, Elizabeth I)
I might be wrong in my understanding but I believe women didn’t have any rights at this time and couldn’t on property in her own name maybe?
Anyway- Why was this allowed to happen? must’ve been a third cousin who is male

Hi!
As far as I know Japanese saw (and see?) their culture as originating from china and recognize that many aspects of their culture such as their writting system is of chinese origin. Yet, during WWII the Japanese army and government commited horrendous crimes against chinese people and, to my knowledge, considered them as subhumans. When and why this racism originated in Japan and how did it concile itself with the Japanese perception of China as one of the main sources of their culture?
Thank you in advance!

While trying to study about the knowledge of the Holocaust of the German people, I wonder if the government itself had ever tried to suppress the information of Jews or other prisoners being exterminated or worked to death in the camps. Seeing that it is a totalitarian government, one might think it is natural for the government to hide the mass killings from the public view. But I find some rather contradiction to the statement. For example, in a post I read about Jakob W, an SS guard at Auschwitz, his brother who was in the Wehrmacht visited him on leave was able to walk around the camp with Jakob, clearly the SS is not trying to hide the killings here. Some Germans claim to not know anything about it, while others has some notions of it, like that the camps did exist but it is to contain the Jews and prevent unrest or where criminals are kept, and they’re only there tin work and help the war efforts. So back to the main question, did the Nazis in some way try to hide the Holocaust, like censoring letters detailing about atrocities and killings (considering that postal censorship exist in Germany)?

I recently read Shadi Bartsch's translation of the Aeneid and I was struck by Aeneas bringing with him his family's household gods during the escape from Troy.
What is the relation of these household gods to the major deities? Aeneas (though touted as pious) seems to care much more for his mother, Venus (I guess that makes sense) and Jupiter than he does to the gods he painstakingly saved.
I am passingly familiar with the idea of ancestor worship practices, so I am not sure if there is a direct comparison, but something in the personal, home-based nature of the gods struck me as similar. How did these gods relate to the dead of the family? Is this considered a form of ancestor worship? Aeneas' father (knowing Rome, father in particular) did not seem to become a household god.
As a final piece, the household gods seem to be bound to objects? Is this an animistic practice? A holdover from before syncretizing with Greek gods?
Thank you!

Older important revolutions in Europe like the 1789 French Revolution did not spread from country to country like these did. What was different? Conversely, why were a few areas like Russia and Spain not affected?

I've come across the signature "Der Kreishauptmann" on dozens of Nazi documents, particularly from occupied Poland. I can't find any half decent explanation of this term online in English, all I can seem to find is that it's a rank or position of some sort. Does anyone know the details of this term or position?

I just read the top answer to this question, written by u/Steelcan909. In it, he/she says that the Anglo-Saxon migration into Britain was previously seen as an invasion of then-Celtic Britain, but is now seen as a peaceful fusion between the Celts and the Germanic people. To me, that sounds very similar to the claims of a generally peaceful 'transformation' of the Roman Empire into early medieval Europe, rather than the traditional narrative of catastrophic collapse. A third example is the Indo-Aryan migration into India, where the previous concept of a violent displacement and enslaving of the indigenous (possibly Dravidian) inhabitants has been replaced by a model of a peaceful acculturation.
What is the basis behind these reevaluations?

The library of the palatine, home to many Protestant works, was famously confiscated by the Catholic Church during the 30 years war. Why is it still stored in the Vatican and not in the hands of Germany or a church or university in Pfalz?

This is a picture of a skull found in Peru. It appears that someone poured some sort of liquid metal into the fractured skull of a living person. The fact that the broken skull sections around the metal bonded together indicates that the person survived the procedure.
Was this an Incan specialty? Do we know what sort of metal was used? Would the heated metal not have damaged the brain underneath?
Do we have reason to suspect such operations were commonly survivable, or was this sort of a hail marry that worked out against the odds? Did other civilizations have this technology, at least in urban areas where "highly trained," doctors might be expected to live?
Also, I don't imagine skin would have grown over the metal. So would this person have had metal visible to those around them?

Hi all. I have inherited a hat from my great great great grandfather who fought in the civil war. The hat is starting to fall apart (not surprising, given its age). How can I care for this hat long term? What’s the best way to handle historical pieces like this? Am I better off donating it to a museum and letting them preserve it?

Hi, I have recently started reading up on conquistador era MesoAmerica, and am fascinated by the stories.
I have so far read
Andres Resendez - a land so strange Buddy levy - conquistador hernan cortes
Does anyone have any good reading suggestions for other conquests?
Or on the other side I would love to read up on native history of the Aztec/Mayan/nahuatl from their side of the story and even before the Spain came.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks.

A discussion over at r/skeptic recently hinged around someone trying to find evidence to refute "spirits and demons" although they seemed less interested in hearing skeptical viewpoints and more interested in arguing in favor of angels and the like. Throughout the discussion the poster determinedly clung to the claim that demons, an evil adversary, and exorcisms where pretty much identical across the known world and this suggested that there was some truth to these beliefs. While I urged the poster to come here to this wonderful subreddit in order to learn more about the subject they didn't seem interested. So instead I decided to ask the question a few days later for my own education, and for future conversations of course.
So what are the actual origins of the christian exorcism, what rituals in other cultures have connections to those european rituals and what is a good way to categorize the broad class of rituals that deal with cleansing in such a way that does NOT lump them all under the category of exorcism. Finally when did Europeans start referring to rituals in other cultures as an exorcism, is this a very modern thing (20th century) or did this start much earlier.
