Are the Irish ethnically Celtic (as in, they descend from participants of the Hallstatt culture), or are they only linguistically Celtic? I've been reading stuff about how the Irish are more akin to the Basques than most other peoples of Europe, and it got me curious about this.

Was valor and honor and glory, the warrior ethos, appealed to more so in the past? How and why did more modern sensibilities take over in terms of recruiting people into the military?
