I am the monarch of a medieval kingdom which has just been conquered by a neighboring empire and I've been captured alive. Will I survive this experience, and if so, what will the rest of my life be like?

If this needs to be more specific, lets say it's the late medieval period, and both nations involved are European and Catholic.

Why and how did jazz music have an explosion in popularity across the globe in the early to mid 20th century?

Where a few decades earlier orchestral composers and traditional brass bands and so on were the norm across Europe and the United States, jazz music seems such a stark change, and which arguably set the stage for rock and roll and so on.

Also given (to my understanding) the prevalence of white culture supremacy and xenophobia, it seems strange that the most popular music style first became popular with blacks and has roots in various cultures including African drums and Latin American music.

And yet I can watch this video of Belgians going wild for black Americans playing music inspired by Tunisia.

Am I perhaps overestimating the level of xenophobia during the time? And why wouldn't this music sound dissonant or uninteresting to people who were raised with an ear for traditional music theory?

Any further interesting information you could add or any sources would be appreciated.

Were there any Vice Presidents that did or were on the verge of being removed from office by their running mate? How about any President/Vice President pairs that just didn't get along at all while in office?

I would assume a President knows his running mate fairly well, but I wonder if any of them actually got to the finish line and once they started their work realized they couldn't stand each other?

Would be curious to know about specific events that might have caused rifts, if there are any.

Thank you all very much in advance for taking the time to answer my question!

EDIT: Just wanted to thank all of you for your responses! I really appreciate the insight, and apparently I am watching too much House of Cards... :)

Good books on the German campaigns of 1813 and the German 'War of Liberation'

I suppose I'm interested in either of 2 types of books

  1. Books focusing on the War of the Sixth Coalition in Germany (both sides) and
  2. Books focusing on the Prussian war effort, particularly any role early German nationalism played.

The one I'm looking at right now is Empire of the Mind, but that covers mainly stuff after the Achaemenids.

Did the timing of Japan's Declaration of War in WWII matter?

I've heard that Japan had intended to declare war before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but the declaration was late and so came an hour after the bombing. I have seen it claimed that the late declaration had a significant effect on the conflict afterwards, but I find that hard to believe. The US was already upset with the Japanese invasion of China, so public opinion wasn't that high. Besides, attacking within an hour after a declaration of war seems fast enough that it could have been cast in a negative light anyway. I have also read some sources which claim the December 7th message wasn't a declaration of war at all (source).

Was the lack of a declaration prior to an attack really that important? Would the US (or the international community) had a more favorable response to the attack if the declaration had come just a little bit earlier? Was the timing of the declaration important to the Japanese view of the war?

Is there anyway to prove that I am the youngest son of a WW2 vet? More info inside.

My father died in 2005 at the age of 81. I only ask because he told me a lot of what I thought were stories but wound up being true. And against his wishes think it needs to be a part of history. Personally, at the time I thought it was all bullshit until he died and then president George W. Bush sent him a flag, a medal of honor, and a signed letter that was hand written. I just wondering is there any good I can do from this?

Why did the "Rumble in the Jungle" boxing match between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali take place in Zaire?

I'm curious about this, especially because my inclination is to compare it as similar to the situation happening with the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Am I wrong to do this? (Also feel free to ignore this part as I realize it may be against the rules)

Why did the match take place in Zaire rather than anywhere else?

What was Canada's role in the Pacific once they declared war on Japan after Pearl Harbor?

I read on a TIL about Canada declaring war on Japan before even America did and was curious on the country's role in general in the Pacific.

Were they a great ally for America during navy battles like Midway?

What about their role in the jungle/island fighting like Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Peleliu, Tarawa etc?

When did neoliberal economics gain such a foothold in American politics.

As I have it understood, Reagan's plans backfired immediately, forcing him to revert most, if not all, his changes. If it was so bad, why has it become so entrenched in the mindsets of more conservative politicians?
