Usually in movies the soldiers rarely use hand grenades, though especially in WW1 the german Sturmtruppen were issued many grenades. How frequently did the soldiers actually use their grenades?

Specifically, what did they do with that expansion? Did they keep on rolling along gobbling up China (and others) as they went? Did they halt all advancements and temporarily put on hold the war(s)? Did they make peace and keep what they had?

...where Columbus's trip spurred Spain and eventually all of Europe to colonize it akin to the scramble for Africa.

I suppose what I'm really asking is: Where is my Viking colonial Empire?!

• Because ships of the time could not transport enough supplies for a colony to work?

I'm probably using the wrong terminology but it's always interested me how the British Army during the late colonial ages were so efficient in battle.

The first half of the 20th century was a busy time in East Asia. For this AMA panel, we're looking at the period from the beginning of the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894 until the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Hello, /r/AskHistorians, I come to you not to ask you to do my assignment for me, only to ask for good books that would help me write about it.

If you want more specifics, here is what I've been assigned:

Write a 10-page paper discussing:

• The country's history of colonial rule

• The nature of its independence movement, its independence leaders, and nationalist popular front/party

• The nature of its class/ethnic/religious compromises or consensus, or lack thereof during independence

• Its position regarding the Cold War conflict; whether it sought a non-aligned position or became part of military pact; played both sides against one another for aid; was part of regional political or economic organizations

• What is the nature of its economic relationship with the First and Second Worlds?

• How does the country’s history reflect or go against aspects of the Third World Platform discussed in your readings and in class lectures?

• Did the independence consensus/compromise hold? If not, what caused its collapse? Was the collapse based on class/ethnic/religious conflict?

• Did they move away from the Third World Platform? If so, why?

I can also chose to do this with Indonesia, the Philippines, Burma/Myanmar, Ghana, Kenya, Algeria, Iran, or Iraq. I just chose Egypt because of it's interesting history.

I hear people talking about how people used to drink beer for breakfast, and how children were given wine to drink. In the Greek myths, binge drinking at feasts seems to be a common theme.

What were the boozing habits of those who came before us? Were women allowed to drink? Did most people drink a lot, or just a little?

I can see how salt came into predominance as it being a flavour (I am Canadian) enhancer. But why pepper?

And why the both of them? Why not something local to regions?

I have a book review assignment and I'm not sure if either of these books are considered to be historical. How do i know if they're under the genre of history?
