Were the sackings a common strategy employed by the cities? Or were they uncommon and extraordinary events? Could you recommend any bibliography about the history of sacking?

As the title said, I grew up in a Young Earth Creationist household, so my historical (and scientific) knowledge is lacking at best. I'd like to learn more about known world history, but I'm finding that my knowledge of the subject is so shallow that I can't even pinpoint specific events to learn more about.

I've been lurking this subreddit for a while, and am slowly gaining bits of knowledge about random subjects. But I need a way to get an overview of big events throughout history so this knowledge can gel a little better.

Can anyone recommend some good reads to help me acquaint myself with world history? Maybe even something that compares/contrasts with a Biblical background, so I can grasp a bit of context from it?

For the record, I am no longer religious, and will by no means be offended by something that tells me how wrong my upbringing was. I just want to learn.

It's very hard to tell using google maps, but in my book I'm writing that All-Hallows by the Tower is in the Whitechapel area/borough of London (in the 1930s). I'd hate to get this wrong but I can find a map with the boundaries clearly delineated.

I heard somewhere that Fidel admitted that he and che treated homosexuals rather "mean", but I never heard che guevera black people horribly, as a matter of fact, didn't che guevera go to the Congo to help the country free itself from a horrible regime?

What would have been the purpose behind this? Was it practical or symbolic?

Reading up on conflicts such as the American Civil War, the Crimean War, the Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War I'm kind of left with an open gap as how they fought battles? What happened when two armies met each other on the open field?

Did they still line up in rank and file and unload volley after volley into each other like the Napoleonic Wars? When did we begin to see the tactics we see today like the 'find cover' and 'suppressive fire'?

I was reading a textbook, and it quoted Adam Smith in the The Wealth of Nations where he said that in Ancient Egypt

"every man was bound by a principle of religion to follow the occupation of his father and was supposed to commit the most horrible sacrilege if he changed it for another."

Is this an accurate? Both how the jobs were assigned, and the fact that it was seen as "horrible sacrilege" to not take up your father's profession
Was this the norm for contemporaneous societies?
Or was this a societal expectation fairly unique to Ancient Egypt?
