Why didn't the Ottoman Empire conquer all of the Arabian Peninsula?

Every map I've seen of the Ottoman Empire has it hugging the coasts of the Arabian Peninsula. The former Caliphates were all able to take the entire peninsula. Was there a reason the Ottomans didn't do the same?

How did the Union treat Confederate soldiers directly after the American Civil War?

Was having a discussion with a friend: the topic of rebellion and treason arose. We were discussing West Point graduates (and officers) who fought for the South. What happened after the War? Were these leaders considered traitors, did any hang? What about army regulators? By definition a rebel who loses usually is considered traitorous. How did the Union deal with it's former adversary in this matter?

How strong was mid-1800s liquor, specifically Whiskey?

After watching people in Saghetti Westerns and Civil War Documentaries shoot whiskey like it was nothing, I was wondering about the strength of alcohol in the 19th century. Obviously the actors in these media outlets aren't actually drinking, but I am curious all the same. Was the Whiskey about 80 proof like is the standard now, or was it stronger or weaker? Why is that?

What were some of the various ideas and concepts associated with dragons in Western Civilizations?

My professor commented in a conversation we had that dragons were, in western society, a symbol of man's fear of the wild. If someone could expand on this or point me to other concepts a dragon could have stood for it would be greatly appreciated.

Did the winter/conditions really make the Germans lose at Stalingrad

People always attribute the winter to crippling the German forces during the Battle of Stalingrad but wouldn't have the Russians themselves been just as equally affected?

To what extent were the Russians affected?

How did the cold affect German equipment/vehicles in comparison to Russian?

Can the winter really be attributed to the Axis defeat? What about tactical errors on part of the Axis?

Has anyone actually escaped a prison or jail with a file baked inside a cake?

Everyone's seen a movie where a protagonist is in prison and someone mentions giving them out with a cake with a file in it. Has there been any documented escape that was attributed to a hidden file inside a cake or is this simply a popular hollywood cop out?

I just watched this great animation about the history of the middle east. Could someone briefly explain who is who in the video?

Here is a link to the video: http://vimeo.com/50531435 It's really great and definitely worth a watch. I don't know much at all about the subject and it's would be great to A) know if it's historically accurate and B) know what it is I'm watching. Some are fairly obvious like the British troops and the Israelis but there are so many "characters" of which I know nothing about. Thanks!

/u/kyoraki exclaims "Russia and the US were originally supposed to untie to take down Japan together, but the US screwed up and ended up murdering millions of civilians in a nuclear holocaust. What kind of crappy protagonist does that?"

What does r/askhistorians think? Was it a show of power vs USSR rather than a lesser evil solution to make Japan surrender? Perhaps both?

Where are the first-hand accounts of Carthage?

In my amateur history reading I always seem to hear about the Carthaginians through Roman and Greek accounts. Are there no first-hand accounts? For a people so rich and powerful throughout both the Greek and Roman periods (well, until Rome destroyed them), and whose wider Phoenician ancestry contributed to the adoption of writing (not to mention the alphabet) in Greece, is there not something strange about this silence?

Did they not keep records of trade and other activities? Did they not have political discussion? Did they use particularly non-durable writing materials? Or were their writings all destroyed by Rome? Or destroyed later maybe, by Islam? Were no non-Roman histories of the region written in the centuries after the fall of Carthage?

Rape in the medieval world. How was it received/treated?

So this is a topic that my wife and I have been discussing.

Given how common rape seems to have been in medieval warfare and/or viking raids, what was its impact? Was the PTSD that commonly happens in rape victims today common?

I don't want to minimize the terrible impact of sexual assault by suggesting that women just shrugged it off back in the day, but if it was that endemic, was it something people were more resigned to happening?

Or does modern drama exaggerate how common it was?

Winter Soldier (Vietnam War documentary) - are the accounts by the soldiers typical? Are they exaggerating? How is the documentary (and backing investigation) viewed today?

NSFW (and potentially NSFL) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj8qYd68rxE&feature=share

This is 'Winter Soldier', a documentary about an inquest into the American military during the Vietnam War. Veterans describe, in harrowing detail, extensive war crimes that they have witnessed, and taken part in. The impression one gets is that the American army was a machine of destruction, wreaking arbitrary misery upon anything that crossed its path, and staffed by young, brainwashed killers.

I have read a couple of books about the war. I was certainly aware of the very significant war crimes that American troops committed, but had not got the impression that the abuses and random killings were as extensive as they are portrayed in the documentary.

I'll try to be diplomatic, as I know this is a sensitive topic. However, it is clear that many of the soldiers have a socialist ('hippie') world outlook, or are somewhat traumatised. Many were simultaneously campaigning against the war. I'm also aware that there were moves at the time to discredit many of the accounts. So really, I'm asking: are the experiences of these veterans typical? Could some be exaggerating for political purposes, or misremembering events due to trauma? How is the documentary, and backing investigation, viewed by historians and other academics today?

During the Battle of Stalingrad, it's said that the troops in Pavlov's House played a single tune over a gramophone. What tune was this?

I have seen several references to finding an old gramophone and only a single working record that was played incessantly during lulls in the fighting. I read that the tune was unknown to the soldiers at the time, but has there been any effort to determine the name of the tune? I first came across the information while watching the "Soviet Storm" series on youtube.
