When did the concept of philosophers as depicted in Ancient Greece go away, and why? Modern philosophy seems to be unheard of to anyone outside philosophy academics. Is that how it would be in Ancient Greece too?

I don’t know if I phrased this question right, but when we think of philosophers we generally think of all these ancient guys. Not necessarily just the Greeks but definitely historical philosophers in general.

I have this image of them as sort of career philosophers, known throughout their countries and who basically spend their lives asking theoretical questions.

So my question is where did that translate to in modern times? Would the authors and writers of today be equivalent to the philosophers of yesteryear? Who are the modern philosophers, and do we think historians will recognize them years from now?

In 2010 series 'Spartacus', in a scene where Spartacus fights as a gladiator while the crowd is dancing and acclaiming him, some women are shown topless. Was it common for women in Ancient Rome to be publicly topless? Otherwise, when and why was Ancient Rome so erotized in the social imaginary?

1800's gun advertisements

Hey

Im writing a thesis that will touch alot upon gun advertisements in the 1860-1920'ish USA.

I read that gun manufacturers like Colt , Remington and Winchester mostly sold their products internatioanally, but eventually that didnt work for them anymore, so in the late 1800's these manufacturers started to heavily advertise the US, because many americans at this point werent interested in effective guns like these. This way they created a market within the US by telling the americans why these guns were nesserary to survive.

Does anyone know a good website or something, where you can find some of these advertisements? Specifically im looking for gun ads that play up the wild west mythos, fear and necessity.

How many types of musket era lines were there and were specifically named?

I know that there were usually 2 ranks and that usually first rank was crouching. But sometimes both ranks were standing and the second rank fired between soldiers in the first rank. Did that have a specific name or did officer just say "both ranks stand"?

alternate opinion pieces on the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand?

Hey guys,

for this semester's history project, I have to look at a contested event in history. now I don't exactly know how I got to this, but I chose the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

I found it easy to find resources and articles of opinions on his assassination but trying to find something that is different, not necessarily opposite just different.

I have found a good opinion/ article for the first perspective, written by the New Zealand Herald but have been unable to find a good comparison article :) link to NZ Herald Piece

So in a way, when Princip stepped out from that doorway and fired his pistol, he had the blood of almost 100 million people on his hands.

i would love to find more opinion pieces but it seems to be an ocean of articles all having the cookie-cutter approach to opinions/ conclusions .

my real question is there any modern or historical works that come to a different conclusion? perhaps saying that was was inevitable?

thanks

Why didn't the Soviet Forces of WW2 develop half-tracks?

[WW2]

The Germans and the Americans developed their half-tracked APCs(Sd Kfz 251 and M3/M5, respectively) in order to fit in with their Blitzkrieg theory of war, as in, carrying troops to the front line quickly so they can finish the job their panzers missed. I know the Soviets had a pretty similar war theory called "Deep Battle"-but if that was the case, why did they lack development in vehicles, like said half tracks, that could quickly carry troops to the front? Because as far as I know the Soviets used Lend-Lease M3, Stude 6x6s, and Willys MBs to do the jobs instead of making one of their own APCs/Troop Transport vehicles.

How did oil play a role in the 1953 coup in Iran?

Hello historians and fellow history lovers! So I have a paper due soon and I’ve done a lot of reading on this subject and took notes while it was reviewed in class. I know that Mossadegh promoted nationalization of Iran’s oil so that Britain and other nations would stop exploiting them (basically) and that Britain was afraid of losing control and their influence. So Britain and the US teamed up in operation Ajax and replaced Mossadegh with the Shah who was pro-West. But, I was wondering if you could give me any more information as to how oil played a role in the coup, specifically on nationalization. If you have any resources I could use I’d also be thankful for those . Basically, if there’s anything else you can tell me about the role of oil so I can have a stronger understanding of the topic will be so useful.

Gladiators are usually depicted with little armour. Why is that? Were rules regulating what gladiators could wear, was it a case of economics as gladiators needed benefactors, or is there another reason?

Did the Coptic Church preserve any elements of Ancient Egyptian religion?

In other parts of the world you hear about local gods reimagined as Christian saints, pagan festivals becoming Christian holidays, religious sites reused as Churches etc. In Egypt, did the Coptic Church preserve any elements of ancient Egyptian religion? What that religion still even practiced in a recognizable form when Egypt was Christianized?

Ice Cream has been around as early as Persian Empire, circa 500 BCE. Both Chocolate and Vanilla come from New World plants, so their use as ice cream flavorings most likely didn't happen for at least another 2000 years. What were the most popular flavors up until that point?

The first to come to mind (and a personal favorite of mine as well) is Pistachio, which I know is quite popular in current-day Iran, and seems like it has quite a history in the region.

Also, I'm less sure on this, but I believe that Strawberry was used primarily medicinally up until the cross-breeding with a New-World variety and didn't really take off until the 18th century. IF so, that'd mean that the top 3 flavors of ice cream are quite new relative to its entire history. I'm really curious what the OG top flavors were across the centuries!

Why has none of the Commonwealth realms called itself a kingdom? And why do most of them have no formal long name at all?

As I was thinking about the different commonwealth realms sharing a monarch, I realized that except for the UK, no Commonwealth Realm has decided to name its state "Kingdom of X", this, even though they are quite clearly kingdoms. Looking more into it, I also realized that the majority of them have no long formal name at all, although those that do tend to be Commonwealths/Federations. The vast majority of sovereign states have long form names, so the fact they dont follow this global trend made me think this is also tied and possibly part of the reason none have named themselves a kingdom. So why is this the case?

How did Nationalism work before Napoleon?

Napoleon is credited for helping create nationalism, especially for groups who otherwise were very disunited, such as the Germans and Italians, and led to people feeling an ethnic kinship with others. How did this work before the Napoleonic Wars? Did a Serbian in the Austrian Empire feel any connection to a Serbian in the Ottoman Empire? Did a Pole in Prussia feel any connection to a Pole in Austria or Russia? Or did a Frenchman, an Englishman, or a Russian feel connected to others of their ethnicity/nationality within their nations outside of simply "living in the same nation?"

Did the Mayan civilization actually collapse?

It feels weird to me that a group of people who were never fully conquered even until today is considered to have "fallen" when Mayan culture is very alive to this day, with millions of people using Mayan languages outside the home in everyday use. Why do we act as if the Maya disappeared in pre-columbian times when they're one of the healthiest indigenous groups in North America?
