1988 BCE, central Anatolia: Very approximately within the timeframe for the foundation of the Assyrian merchant colony in the city of Kaneš(Hittite Neša, modern Kultepe), which would grow to become one of the major entrepots of the early Bronze Age Near East and whose tablet archive is one of our most valuable sources on international commerce in this period. The colony lasted until the 18th century BCE, approximately the time when the city of Kaneš was conquered by the Anatolian and probably Indo-European speaking kings Pithana and Anitta.
