There was actually an interesting article on this in the Arkansas Historical Quarterly last year. Story Matkin-Rawn in The Other Great Migration argues that Arkansas and northern Texas were actually desired destinations for those leaving the strict racism and Jim Jrow of Virginia and South Carolina. Places that had greater Black than White populations used more militant policing strategies. And this sparked the Great Migration from these centers of violence. Unlike most areas in the north where there was a very small African American community Arkansas had the social base that made transition a little easier for a migrating tenant farmer. But it is interesting because over the past few years there has been a second narrative emerging that shows African Americans going North, West, and to other friendlier places in the South.
