Here and in other "vintage" media, it seems like housewives had to just make jello everything. Please explain the phenomenon.

Jell-O was marketed heavily as a quick, easy and cheap way to make a wide variety of flavors. It fell into the line of a prepackaged food item that during the post-war boom was in high demand by budding families. When you think about it, you really only need boiling water to make Jell-O; the basic principal was the same then as it is now. A really cheap, really cool product that could be made into a huge variety of styles is something that during the industrialized food-boom was exactly what people wanted. Despite Jell-O being around since the early 1900s, it was only a small success until after the Second World War.

Jell-O also marketed flavors in both fruit and vegetable varieties and was constantly adding and removing flavors such as tomato and apple. Jell-O was made to be an independent food or something you could add to/prepare meals with such as Jell-O salad.
