There was segregation against Mexican-Americans, although it doesn't seem to have been as extensive or as formalized as it was against African-Americans in the South. Some examples: Mendez Vs. Westminster was a federal court case having to do with school segregation in Orange County, California, that actually predates Brown vs. Board of Education (1947, I believe). There was also a case where a veteran's cemetery in Texas refused the burial of a Congressional Medal of Honor winner during WWII. His widow fought it for years; eventually JFK intervened and had the soldier reinterred at Arlington.
I'm afraid I must resist the impulse to share anecdotal accounts (grandparents, etc.), but perhaps you might find some first- or second-hand stories via Google.
