What resources are available for obtaining historical road and highway maps?

I'm curious if there is anywhere online with resources I could use to piece together what my hometowns road network used to look like. Unfortunately I live far from where I grew up so anything involving the visiting a history centre or something like that isn't possible. Specifically, I'm talking about Athens, Ga.

For city maps, nothing beats the Sanborn Fire Insurance maps. For instance, this is Athens in 1903.

For less dry maps, normally I'd suggest the state's flagship university library. Here's the University of Georgia map collection, but it doesn't look like they have any of their city maps of Athens or even of Clarke County online. For a bigger picture on roads, there are several of Georgia as a whole, often with highways.

The best place to look for such material is the registrar of deeds for a town. Since you can't physically get there right now I would suggest you find the contact information for Athens, GA and see if they have a website. If not they would likely be happy to work with you over the phone to get you scans or pictures.
