Has there ever been a serious movement to split Russia into separate states?

With Russia being as large as it is, and with the bulk of the population/political clout seemingly centered in the west, I was curious to see if there had been any discussion of break up the federation, especially in the wake of the Soviet Union.

They kind of already do.

They currently have Eighty-Three(83) Federal Subjects, which are generally on par with other countries "states". Each subject has equal rights as constituent entities within the Russian Federation and they each have their own constitutions and legislation with each subject having 2 representatives in the Federation Council.

The Russian Federation's current state is already after two major episodes of balkanizations: the Russian Civil War period and the Fall of the USSR.

So to answer your question more directly: Russia's old boundaries have already been split up to the point where further splits are no longer as real a possibility, beyond continuing sectarian issues continuing to exist (primarily in the Caucuses).
