Relatively recently it was found that there were domesticated cats in China over 5,000 years ago, so they definitely came before the Roman era. Romans were great lovers of dogs (Molossus, and greyhound in particular). They even had smaller "lap" dogs like the Melitaean imported from Malta. They also kept cats, geese and doves as pets.
