Hispanics and the Civil War

by DonaldFDraper

Hello, I am curious as to the level of involvement the Hispanic population of Texas had in the American Civil War. Was Texas heavily conscripted and was there a large Hispanic population as there is in Texas today or was the population made up of Americans that came to Texas during the 1830s-50s?

I've always heard that the Hispanic population was very low, which is why White settlers were so welcome. Here is a link to a page from the Texas State Historical Society webpage, they show very low numbers of Hispanics in Texas (and the sources used to attain them). http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/ulc01

That link doesn't give an exact 1860 Hispanic headcount, but the numbers would not be very high imo.
