Around the year 400 CE, there was apparently a power struggle in Constantinople between the prefect Aurelian and an unknown rival. Our only source for this conflict is the Egyptian Tale, by bishop Synesius of Ptolemais; but Synesius framed the whole narrative as an ancient Egyptian myth, with Aurelian as Osiris and his rival as Osiris’ brother Typho.
