I have watched apoclypse now a few times now and every time i see the scene where the US outpost is fighting for the bridge with out commanding officer it makes me question its reality. Is there any truth to events like this that have happened or was this just in the movie?
It is important to know, when watching this movie, that it is a recreation of the 19th century novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. The novel's setting is colonial Africa and the organization he is a part of is the British East India Company. The themes used in this book are transferred to the Vietnam War setting, and aren't meant to be a literal take on the events of the war, but instead to highlight extreme aspects of human character by presenting absurd situations.
