I am a middle-class merchant in the early 1500s. How much do I know about Columbus's travels and what he found? Would my knowledge vary if I was from Spain or England or Germany? How soon did this type of information become common knowledge?

I found this excerpt from a German book.

It says today there are 22 pamphlets in various languages left which were published between 1493 and 1520 and dealt with the discovery of America. 18 of those were published between 1493-1497. 11 contained the original text by Colombus describing the discovery. This seems to indicate a rather widespread publicity - according to this excerpt. Another indicator for example is that already in 1494 there was a moral satire called Das Narrenschiff (The Ship of Fools) by Sebastian Brandt dealing with the discovery of America. Big chronicles and other literature of the caliber started including the discovery from 1507 on, first in Italy with Franzesco de Montalboddos Paesi Novamente Retrovati

Now when you say Germany, keep in mind, Germany was a region of numerous states and Kingdoms. I'm pretty sure a man in Pomerania would know more than a man in Frankfurt or Mainz Frankfurt or Mainz would know more about the New World than a man in Pomerania would.

EDIT: I fixed my mistake, my bad
