In the constitution it says you need to be born in America to become president (not the only qualification but for the purpose of the question) were all the presidents up to Martin Van Buren born on the continent of North America as British subjects? or were they immigrants that came to the colonies but participated in the Revolution?
The specific clause in the United States Constitution reads as follows: "No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President".
Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, J.Q. Adams and Andrew Jackson were all born on the North American continent (and all but Jackson were born in one of the original Thirteen Colonies). All of the Vice Presidents of the United States were also born in one of the states.
