What was the cultural extent of the (Classical) ancient Greeks?

by alphawolf29

I was looking at a map of the Crimean peninsula and was surprised to find many ancient Greek colonies dotting its coasts. I had previously believed that the Greeks had been confined to the Mediterranean. This leads me to the question, what is the northern, southern, eastern and western extent of peoples who would identify as "Greeks" before ~400 B.C. ?

You should read up something about the Greek colonization. Here is a good map of Greek colonies in 600 BC. Because Greeks settled on the coast of the Mediterranean and Black seas, the southernmost possible place was Egypt and the northernmost possible place was Tanais (today's Azov).
