To what extent did Black Power contribute to the demise of the Civil Rights Movement?

by [deleted]

I'm trying to think of some more points which would help argue that other factors led to the demise of the Civil Rights Movement. My current points:

FOR:

  • Black Panthers - young membership with wrong motives?
  • Context of the time - Vietnam and communism. Black Panthers could be seen as a "communist threat"
  • Measures such as carrying guns and 'patrol the pigs'
  • Rejection of white people by the SNCC + CORE
  • Ambiguous term of "Black Power"

AGAINST (other factors):

  • Accomplished what they had set out? (Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights 1965, 1968)
  • Death of King - SCLC never regained popularity

Could anyone come up with anymore for against (and even for for), that would be very helpful.

Thanks.

All these sound almost exactly like an AS Level History question.

If it is, you need to ask yourself: Do I really want to ask people for help on a topic that should be an exercise in research and critical thinking?

Seriously though, the textbook should have everything you need in it, evidence wise. Really look at the period which you've been given and the significant events of the time.

This is a loaded question in that it leads the reader to believe that the black power movement contributed negatively to the civil rights movement, and it also leads the reader to believe that the civil rights movement is something that is in the past and is over. A better way to phrase it would be "What effect did the black power movement have on the efficacy of the civil rights movement in [timeframe]?"
