I found a dozen old photographs in my grandparent's trunk. If I knew the era and nationality I could probably narrow down which of my relatives they are. I suspect either Irish or American because the logo on the contact print reads "Visit Portrait", which probably rules out my Czech relatives. Can you tell more by the uniforms?

Hi there! First off- Do you happen to have a date for this photograph?
Hmm- Those definitely don't look American to me. Judging from the caps, these men are in Austro-Hungarian uniforms, which would make sense for Czech relatives. Though obscure, I believe you can almost make out the Hapsburg eagle on their belt buckles.
The shoulder wings on the epaulettes indicate that both gentlemen are members of a Jäger, or rifle regiment. The plates on the caps, though obscure, would display a national cockade. The star collar badge on the gentleman on the left is a rank insignia- This badge signifying he is a 'Patrouilleführer', or lance-corporal. As for the shoulder cords- I'm unsure. However, I believe they indicate the arm of service.
All this seems to indicate these gentlemen are members of one of the Bohemian Feldjäger battalions.
I hope this was helpful- If you want, I'll get back to you when I have more information. If you're interested in learning more about Austrian uniforms, the most comprehensive English-language source I'm familiar with is Richard Knotel's Uniforms of the World translated by Roland G. Ball.
