What were the religions prominent in Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, etc) before the arrival of Islam? Also any interesting titbits about the region during that era would be much appreciated. Thanks!

It was a belief in nature gods, prominently - in the god of sky, Tengri, thus the religion. The religion is basically based on respect for nature and lots of superstitions, also there's a strong belief in the spirit of ancestors.

Some signs of tengrism exist to this day: a lot of people hang special plants above their doors at home that is believed to scare evil spirits off.
