While I despise what Nazi did, I am somewhat awed by their PR campaign. How did they managed to make public turn their back against Jewish war heroes?
Jewish veterans had some level of privilege in the early days of the war (http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10005469), though it did not last. As for how the tide of public opinion was turned, the simple answer is propaganda. There are books, articles, and films on the subject of Nazi propaganda, including "Bending Spines" by Bytwerk.
