What were the primary types of alcohol available to the average Roman citizen?

by BuoySwim

For example, was beer or mead available? What were the roles meant for each type of alcohol? Was wine supposed to be used for religious ceremonies only?

Wine and beer were both consumed in various parts of the Roman empire during its height in the 2nd century AD. However, wine was by far a more prestigous beverage, and beer was largely only consumed in northern parts of Gaul, Germany, and Britain. Romans in Italy or the Mediterranian basin would drink wine, regardless of social class or wealth. Wine was consumed as an everyday beverage by all social classes, not just on special occasions or for religious events.
