How did coffee become more prevalent than chocolate as a US beverage?

I have read about chocolate being served as a drink, much like coffee is. How did that practice fall by the wayside in much of North America?

Coffee originated in Africa, while Chocolate was a New World product. So while Coffee had spread around most of Europe by the 14th century or so, Chocolate had obviously not. So the simplest answer is because coffee was more rooted. Now I know a lot more about coffee than I do chocolate, so as to why chocolate never gained a popularity even up to today, I can't answer.
