How far was Machiavelli a critic of Christianity?

by Bakuraptor

I've been reading his Discourses on Livy, and there are several points (IE Book II, Ch. 6) where he seems to criticise Christianity for various reasons. Was this evidence of problems he specifically had with Christianity or an appraisal of the role of religion in politics?

Machiavelli, a critic of many things, was profoundly outspoken regarding his views on the Catholic Church. One of his main criticisms was that the church instilled a feeling of slovenliness into the Italian populace, resulting in a lack of civil and political activeness.
