I know that South American peoples had llamas, alpacas and chickens, and that both Americas had dogs. Were there any other domestic animals in the Americas pre-Columbian contact? Did North America have reindeer/carabou herding tribes like the Saami?
In Mexico they had turkey and muscovy duck. The people at Mayapan were in the process of domesticating deer before the city was abandoned. South Americans had guinea pigs.
Also, I thought chickens in South America was under debate.
hi! There have been several threads on domesticated animals in the Americas. Most of them have focused on dogs and pack animals such as llamas, as you mention; there's scant discussion of other animals, so hopefully your post will attract some more responses.
