Best books providing an overview of danish history?

by smidivak

I'm looking for a general introduction in danish history, preferably written in danish. What are the best up to date books that give an overview of danish history, not being too detailed, yet not merely providing a superfical listing of dates and events? Optimally it would be in a style similarly to Will Durant's "History of Civilization" series.

I have tried searching in the danish public library, but I find it rather difficult to navigate over a 1000 matches, and I quite frankly don't know whether or not the books I find are any good or not. If someone could recommend me the most respected books on danish history, preferably in danish, I would be grateful.

I suggest Kjersgaards Danmarkshistorie 1-3. If you feel like reading something more in-depth, dansk udenrigspolitisk historie 1-6 (Albrechtsen, Frandsen, Lind).

When i was in college the overview book series were "Gyldendal & Politikens Danmarkshistorie". The volume on medieval times was the basic book in the course I took on medieval history.

It's a multi-volume treatment of all of Danish history. It's still the first book series I go to when I want to look up something.

If you're looking for a single volume book you might try "Danmarkshistoriens Hvem Hvad & hvornår".

I'm on my 4th semester and we are currently, and have been for some time, using "Danmarks historie - i grundtræk" by Steen Busck. I know it cost about 300-400 kr.

It covers from about 1300-1980 as far as I can recall, it's an easy read and I would recommend it.
