Why did people emigrate to the US from Lithuania in the late 1800's?

The holocaust had not yet begun, and my family was not Hewish, yet, I can't seem to understand why they would travel across the glove to the US when they did. (Genealogy research). Thanks.

Specifically, Wistiniecz, Lithuania, which I've seen in many different spellings, like "Vistytis", etc

Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was because of the "free country" "unlimited possibilities" "big money" craze that was going on.
