Or like this. However, I think that this proposed reconstruction is a bit angelic: I don't see why an independant Africa would not have produced multiethnic states/empires with oppressed minorities. There are no more ethnic groups in Africa than in Europe in 500 AD; but our history has led to a progressive (and sometimes violent) integration of these groups into wider entities. From what we know of historical structured African polities, they were no more “tolerant” or “inclusive” than European states at comparable states of organization.
