I don't want to google pictures of "Hitler Salute" here at work, but the examples can be easily found. Hitler looks more like he's just waving "Haaay" to his friends rather than being the leader of a nation.
I would just hazard to say that if everybody you walked past saluted you as the Führer, and you were expected to salute back, you would probably lose the love as well.
Think about it. How many times in a day would Hitler salute? Dozens? Hundreds?
I have never read anything about this being perceived as negative.
