How did sailors on wooden battleships repair cannonball damage to areas below the water line?

Essentially a large wooden plug, some oakum (a rope-and-tar caulking), and a wooden mallet to drive it all in. There is a scene in "Master and Commander" (the film) in which you can briefly see the process, and I believe there is a detailed description in the Patrick O'Brian novel of the same name.*

*Caveat: It's been awhile since I've read the novel.
