Why did Germany lose the battle of Stalingrad?

by [deleted]

Title, and if so, are there any books on it with two preferably differing sides? I know some factors include the environment, soviet numbers, and hitler's restrictive leadership, but can someone help detail this for me? Thanks! :)

I highly recommend David Glantz and Jonathan M. House trilogy about Stalingrad. It is very detailed and filled with real data. Volume 3 was split by publisher in two books.

As for personal take from USSR side - Sgt Pavlov, Maj. Gen. Rodimtsev and Lt. Gen. Chuikov memoirs. Only Chuikov's were translated into English.

D. Glantz, M. House Stalingrad trilogy:

Militera.ru - russian online project, free to use. Google translate works OK, translation quality far from perfect.

And I've posted in this Stalingrad-related thread - you might be interested - http://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1r76sf/is_it_true_that_the_germans_lost_more_men/
