This new book by Prof. Candida Moss suggests that there really wasn't a sustained "persecution" of Christians in the 2nd or 3rd centuries CE. She argues that there's a difference between "persecution" and "prosecution" and that the (relatively) few Christians who did die were victims of the latter, rather than the former.

I find the argument compelling, though it does subvert some current scholarly paradigms.
