After reading about the IJN's disaster with the Shinano and its own poor damage control actions, I'm interested in seeing what the comparisons were across different navies. Were there specific crews assigned to the role or was it the task of each separate battle station? How big was the technological gaps between the axis and allied navies?
The Shinano had such poor damage control because it was not a fully crewed and combat-ready ship. When it was torpedoed, it was in the process of being moved to Kure for a) protection from air raids and b) final fitting out and equipping. It did not have a full crew of men, the ship was brand new and not completed, and of the people that were on board, many were civilian construction and dockyard workers.
Beyond that, I don't know too much about damage control procedures. I would suspect that there are only so many ways to fix a ship, and there were several cases of Japanese vessels returning with heavy damage, so I don't know if Japanese damage controls were particularly deficient. The ability of a ship to survive damage was most likely due to the design and construction of the ship rather than the specific damage control procedures of the crew.
