After spending the better part of this last week shoveling my driveway and slipping around on the roads, I got to thinking: how did ancient cities handle snow removal? What about medieval?
Was there an attempt to remove the snow, or just work around it? Were there organized public clearing services like ox-driven plows? How debilitating could a snowstorm like the one the northeastern United States just got (~12-15 inches in 3 days) be to a city in Gaul, Rus, Qin China, or Roman provinces?
I guess North America has seen a lot of snow this winter, because this question came up before with some really good answers!
Well the answer is about snowfall, not necessarily heavy. A lot of North America gets more snow than most of Europe.
