How is Gorbachev remembered in today's Russia?

by tosk

In the West, Gorbachev is somewhat romanticized, or at least credited with being reasonable and understanding in trying to reform the USSR.

However, for some Russians (or other USSR loyalists) I could see how Gorbachev could be seen as a weak leader who more or less allowed the break up of the soviet bloc countries, and eventually the collapse of Moscow.

Any insight would be appreciated, and any conjecture regarding how this effects Russian international relations today is welcomed, just please signify that it is conjecture.

As usual, the answer to such a question will be "depends whom you ask". As with most politicians, how they are seen will vary from person to person depending on their political leanings and worldview. Fortunately for us, the Russia Wikipedia has a link to a poll done Levada Center (a Russian polling organization) in which people were asked their opinion on Gorbachev. 18% had a positive opinion, 28 negative, and the rest either declined to answer or didn't have an opinion. Another point of data that we can use is the fact that Gorbachev, to some extent, remained active in the Russian politics but was rather unsuceessful. He ran for president of Russia back in 1996 but received less than 1% of the vote. He also founded a political party which wasn't successful and eventually merged with another party. So it does seem like Gorbachev is much less popular within Russia as he is in the West.

I can't really answer the second part of your question.
